FREQUENTLY ASKED SKUNK EXTERMINATION & CONTROL QUESTIONS
The striped skunk is recognized by its famous white stripe or stripes that run down their backs highlighted by their jet-black fur coats. There bodies range from 20 to 29 inches in length with an average weight of 6 to 8 pounds. Most Skunks will become active in early evening and remain active throughout the night tearing up lawns and gardens in search of food.
Throughout the cold winter months, Skunks will remain inactive spending most of their time in their dens and could remain in their dens for weeks at a time. Although Skunks do not hibernate, they still need to rely on their fat reserves to survive the winter, in some cases multiple skunks will overwinter in the same den to help preserve body heat. Breeding will take place in late winter with the young usually being born in mid-spring to early summer. Skunks will usually produce 3 to 5 young per litter and under optimal environmental conditions Skunks have been recorded having up to 10 young in 1 litter.
