How do you get rid of Raccoons in the house, garage, attic, shed etc.?

Extermination & Control:

Implementing proper Raccoon control measures in and around your home and/or business can lower the risk of raccoons invading your structure. Garbage bags left curb side can provide a regular food source for invading raccoons in your area, using metal and/or sturdy plastic cans with tightly secured lids in conjunction with weights, wire, latches, and clamps can be utilized to help keep Raccoons from knocking the lids off the cans, tying the cans down or storing them in racks will help prevent Raccoons from pushing the cans over on there side. Outdoor pet food and/or pet feeding stations should be kept clean and sanitized, outdoor kitchens and BBQ’s can provide some attracting smells to Raccoons and should be cleaned regularly. Storing empty beer and/or alcohol bottles in your shed and/or garage can attract Raccoons to your location.

Removing Raccoons in spring or early summer from attics and/or any other locations they are invading should be completed with caution as there is a possibility that baby Raccoons may also be present and if so all exclusion methods should be stopped until it is certain that all baby raccoons have been located, removed and/or left the structure on their own. Once exclusion tactics have resumed it is possible to keep Raccoons out for good by securing all roof vents with wire vent covers and excluding all areas where shingles meet the soffit and/or areas Raccoons can reach the soffit. Chimney tops should also be secured with wire mesh caps to eliminate entry points.

DESCRIPTION:

Raccoons range in length anywhere from 15 to 30 inches not including the length of the tail which can vary from 6 to 20 inches in length, while their body weight is highly situational and directly related to the habitat they live, in conjunction with the amount of food that is available to Raccoons will determine their overall size which can range from 8lbs to 70lbs. One of the most noticeable and exclusive characteristics of the Raccoon are the black rings on their tails combined with their black patches of fur around the eyes which is highlighted by the surrounding white fur on the Raccoons face, giving them the look they are waring a robber’s mask and enhancing their conspicuous behavior and reputation. These patches around their eyes may also help in reducing glare and/or help with their night vision abilities. Male Raccoons are generally 12 to 18% heavier then female Raccoons, both male and female Raccoons can weigh nearly double in fall as they do in spring as a result of fat storage for the long winter months. Long guard hairs which are found on different parts of their bodies which are responsible for discharging moisture are generally coloured grey with some shades of brown with Raccoons dense undercoat which amounts to 85% of their fur coat provides insulation from cold winter weather and is made up off ½ to 1 ½ inch long hairs.

BIOLOGY

Raccoons have a gestation period of roughly 60 to 75 days after which anywhere from 2 to 5 young Raccoons will be born (kits) in spring and/or early summer. The Kits will remain with their mother as she raises them until late fall when they will be pushed away by their mother to live on their own and start a new life.
