It is an unfortunate fact that most homes will have to deal with some of the most common household bugs that can invade stored foods. Typically these pests are not native to your specific home. These house bugs are brought in with the foods and goods that you bring home from the store. There are a few different varieties of stores product household bugs that can invade your home or business; Red Flour Beetle, Confused Flour Beetle, Saw Toothed Grain Beetle, Merchant Grain Beetles, and Indian Meal Moths. These pests will feed on foods like grains, flour, dried fruit, cereal, nuts, candy, spices, and more. Aside from feeding off of food, they will be contaminating foods as well! Prior to buying any stored foods make sure to inspect the boxes, bags, or other containers very carefully.

The Confused Flour Beetle is most commonly mistaken for the red flour beetle. The two different species look very much the same and have the same eating habits. A confused flour beetle is most commonly found feeding and breeding within cereal boxes, flour, and other stored foods. Confused flour beetles will not feed on whole wheat products. Like the red flour beetles, the confused flour beetle infestation can occur very quickly because of their short gestation period. After an infestation you will need to hire a professional to teach you how to get rid of the confused flour beetle and keep them away!

 

 Red flour beetles are one of the most common household food storage pests. They measure around 3mm long, and are typically red in color. The household red beetles are typically found in cereal, flour, and sugar containers within a home. Red beetles are also common in grocery stores and this is usually the way that they make it into households and businesses. These pests can make their way inside packages that appear to be closed, so checking closed packages is very important as well. While feeding off of the stored foods the female beetles will lay their eggs within the cereal, flour, etc. Since these beetles reproduce rather quickly, 7 weeks from larvae to adult, infestations can occur quickly.

Unlike other household moths, the Indian meal moth is quite small at adulthood and measures less than 1 inch. Unfortunately these moths are known as pantry moths because they infest dried, stored foods. Their diets mean that these moths can be found inhabiting, feeding off of, and laying their eggs within dried pasta, rice, bread, dried fruits, and even pet food. There seem to be few pantry items that are not consumed by Indian meal moths. Unfortunately infestations can occur rapidly and professional help is usually needed to learn how to get rid of moths at this stage.

Like the flour beetles the saw toothed grain beetle is a major household pest that can be found within stored foods. The sawtoothed grain beetle is smaller than the red or confused beetle and are not reddish in color. They also cannot fly like the red and confused beetle. The saw toothed grain beetle is so small that it can infest broken or cracked corn and rice kernels. It also feeds on flour, cereal, pet foods, seeds (sunflower, bird seed, pumpkin, etc.), prescription medications, nuts (walnuts, macadamia nuts, etc.), spices, and much more. These beetles lay their eggs on the food source so that they can feed when they hatch. Saw toothed beetles can go from larvae stage to adulthood in less than 8 weeks. The merchant grain beetle is very similar to the saw toothed grain beetle and tend to have very similar feeding and breeding habits. These household beetles are quite small and can even make their way into seemingly closed packages. Like the saw toothed beetles, the merchant beetles can cause an infestation very quickly. It is imperative for the health of you and your family that you have pantry beetles cleared out and cleaned up after quickly and efficiently.

 

Treatment preparation checklist

  1. All food and food related products pots, pans, cutlery, dishes etc. should be removed from the area being treated.
  2. Inspection of all dries stored products, discarded properly or restored and tagged inspected with date.
